Les progrès de la chimie conditionnent cette activité traditionnelle de l'humanité qu'est l'aménagement de son habitat. Elle offre à l'architecte une palette toujours plus riche qui conduit à la diversité d'aujourd'hui des villes, de l'immobilier de loisir et des édifices publics de la vie moderne. À côté des bois ou des bétons, toujours majoritairement utilisés, c'est l'irruption des vitrages modernes, des textiles nouveaux et les multiples emplois des matériaux polymères qui marquent les évolutions actuelles ; leurs propriétés sont abordées dans ce livre. Mais les demandes d'aujourd'hui se placent sous le signe du « développement durable », de l'économie des ressources et de la recherche du confort. On montre ici comment la chimie permet d'éviter le gaspillage et d'utiliser l'énergie solaire ou le biogaz provenant des déchets ménagers, et comment elle permet le recyclage des matériaux des bâtiments vétustes. On présente aussi la chimie du végétal, voie de recherche aujourd'hui déjà très performante pour fournir liants et pigments des peintures. Quant au confort, s'il est lié aux matériaux - par le contrôle de la lumière et de la température des habitations -, il exige aussi le contrôle de la qualité de l'air intérieur dont les dommages potentiels à la santé ont été réalisés récemment. Tous ces aspects sont traités et illustrés. Réfléchir à l'habitat moderne conduit à découvrir plusieurs pans des sciences chimiques - les matériaux, les polymères, l'analyse moléculaire, les bilans d'énergie. L'habitat ? Encore un domaine où la chimie, bien loin d'être cause de nuisances, se révèle source de satisfactions indispensables.
